Milwaukee Milestones

Welcome to Milwaukee, a city with a rich and dynamic history. This timeline is a very brief overview of housing in Milwaukee, starting from the city’s creation in 1846 to the near-completion of the two highrises in downtown. Throughout Milwaukee’s history, racial inequity has remained a long-standing problem, from the effects of redlining and lack of opportunities for Milwaukee’s Black population. Milwaukee’s housing history has several of the nations firsts, all while the effects of racism play in the background. This timeline includes Fair Housing Marches to highlight the lesser known history of the Civil Rights Era, and to be an introduction to a greater audience. The City of Milwaukee has always been a diverse city, and this continuation today has enriched the city’s culture and success.
